More About This Painting

The Chief is a prominent figure in the Strange City. You recognize him by his well-worn suit and the unusually small hat for his head. He has a neatly messy mustache and round, piercing eyes! You’d swear he’s looking at you no matter which side you’re on! Such a thing… The townspeople usually lower their heads when passing near him to avoid his strangely piercing gaze, and he, smugly, continues on his way. He has only one real friend: his parrot, Roulis! “Roulis, my friend, today is a big day… I’ll become the Chief of Strange City!” Roulis looked at him bored and said the only word he knew: Okay! “Bravo, Roulis! Good bird! I’m off now, see you tonight.” Poor Roulis was stunned with anxiety and longing for a walk, but this time too, he would stay in his golden cage! You see, the Chief is afraid of birds! He had taken Roulis home, following a doctor’s recommendation, to overcome his fear. Poor Roulis!

The Chief has other fears as well. He fears the sun, sound, a bit the sea, but mostly he fears women! He never understood Eve’s creation, no matter how many times he read the Bible. Whenever he reached that chapter, he’d twist his snout and mutter… “Foolish Eve!” Only one woman stood out in the whole city: True! You see, she resembled his colorful clothes and his parrot, Roulis, so he assumed he could trust her. He even convinced himself that True descended from Adam’s lineage, not Eve’s. Lucky Adam! This is the Chief of Strange City: serious, measured, a little misogynistic, hardly an animal lover, old-fashioned, and probably madly in love with True.
